Beau Navire - Lumens

So, I would imagine you know this already, but Beau Navire is a screamo band from Oakland that consists of members of, amongst other bands, Iwrotehiakus... and Loma Prieta. They recently went on a midwest / east coast tour with We Were Skeletons. I got to see them twice, and it was stellar. Top notch. Anyways, before their tour they released a really fucking good lp called "Lumens", and I wanted to share it even though I'm sure anyone who was waiting for this LP to drop already has it. For those of you who don't, you are missing out and should take a listen. Really great dudes, backed pretty hard. Jon just started a label called 50  Year Storm. Check it out. Support these dudes. Beau Navire / Republic of Dreams

This split has already made its rounds through the blogs, seeing as it has been out on the internet for a minute now. I picked this joint up a while ago when I blog raided. I admit I don't really surf that many sites regularly, but every once in a while I'll just binge download a shitload of stuff from the same like ten blogs.

I have posted a few times about Beau Navire, so I don't really feel the need to describe them again. If you don't know who they are you can look at the older posts about them, but I don't really think that is nesecarry. They are real good. This other band, Republic of Dreams, surprised the shit out of me. Chaotic screamo with members of Resurrectionists, Apoplexy Twist Orchestra, and Louise Cyphre. Super impressed with their material. This split is one of the better releases I have heard thus far in the year, and one reason why is because both bands compliment each other beautifully. Moment of Collapse put out this record, so you can pick it up here along with tons of other distros. Download it below and please buy it so you can support these bands. Beau Navire is going on tour with We Were Skeletons this summer and the dates are right here.

On a side note, with all this weird shit with mediafire and the government and downloading we will do our best to continue Chug Life. My mediafire is still up and works, but if it shits the bed I'll switch over to other similar hosting sites. If/when all those go I'll just switch everything over to torrents. I don't want to stop doing this.

More Loma Prieta & Punch

Alot of buzz about Loma Prieta recently. They got signed to Deathwish, who are putting out their upcoming fully "I.V.", and are currently finishing up a tour of the states. Some of those new songs are floating around the internet and stuff. Pretty sure CMHWAK radio got like an exclusive track or something.

Since Loma has been so hot in the collective unconcious as of late I was checking up on them, gettin the haps, when I realized how much I have been slacking on my Loma game. First of all, found the Punch split which is pretty really dope. Secondly, realized that Life/Less wasn't even on here, so I felt obligated to correct that error. Also, Punch has an LP out which we haven't posted yet, so that is going down too. And another EP. I'm not as into Punch as Carlo is so I would have figured he would cover all the Punch stuff. Homeboy was slippin, but its okay because Daddys home now. Needless to say all this music is good, bro. Buy it after you try it, bro.

I'm kind of really bummed because Loma is playing Portland right now, and I'm just baking on my couch watching NOVA and eating my third and fourth can of Chef Boyardee of the day. I don't know if they are going to be in Seattle tomorrow but it doesn't even matter because I have school all night. Growing up sucks.

Beau Navire - Hours

Album of the year. React With Protest is releasing Beau Navire's newest effort to support their European tour thats going down in June. I heard about this album leaking from the kid who does re-winded tapes, but his link is dead so I got this album from Circling The Drain.

The quality of the record is superb. All the levels are perfect. It isnt as spazzy as Life Moves, but that doesnt mean it isn't skrumzy as balls. Super mature too. Grown up screams. Aside from "No Ghost", this is the record I have been most excited about so far this year. You know how every album has those like three tracks that are the bangers, and then the ones that are cool and then sometimes there are those filler tracks? Well, this album is, literally, all club bangers. The intrumentation is superb, the vocals are really well done (only one set of vox now? No, but they don't utilize dual vocals as much as Life Moves), and they have started using more ambient guitar tracks to excentuate the soft/loud stop/start dynamics. Also some obvious hardcore dynamics involved. Their guitar tone and melodies are on point 100%.

Your new favorite band, and in the running for best dudes in California. Hopefully they will be able to do some touring in America. I hope that this surge of material from Beau dosnt burn them out, because they need to keep on pumping out the jams. Insert some stupid tagline about screamo and d.i.y this and that. Download Hours below, under that video. BUY IT.

Beau Navire / Suffix Split

Oh shit. Three new Beau Navire tracks and two new from Suffix. Beau Navire is from the San Francisco bay area and has members of Spectres, Loma Prieta and Iwrotehiakusaboutcannabalisminyouryearbook. Suffix is from Chicago and has members of Coping and Lautrec.

This split is hard hitting. Suffix has the A side. The vocals are pretty harsh, but they sound fucking great. The instrumentation and quality is pretty boss too. Really catchy riffs and good lyrics. I have a crush on their vocalist. I never really paid much attention to this band until now; hate to say I was missing out.

Beau Navire is, by process of elimination, side B. Their side starts out spacey, then gets really spastic and wild. Their recording quality on this record is different than their other releases: a little more lo-fi and the guitars are lower in the mix. This side of the record, in general, sounds way more experiential than anything else I have heard by them. Still driving punk parts and skrimzy what-have-yous, but there are a few added elements. Solid side though.

Both bands did a killer job on this split. Hurry and pick up your copy so Beau Navire can get some more money for Europe. What is Suffix up to? Give them money to do the stuff that they want to do as well. This was released by Bear Records, Forever Escaping Boredom, and A Mountain Far Records. Please go pick up a copy from whichever label you chose.

Adobe Homes & Beau Navire Split

So I'm at school right now, sitting in the computer lab waiting to go sleep through a movie about Japanese internment camps or something. I am using the high-speed internet to my advantage and getting about a week's worth of blog-trolling in, and I stumbled upon this gem over at Circling The Drain (tight blog, if you have never been there before). I have not gotten the chance to download this album yet, but I am 110% positive that is is fucking dope. The pre-orders should have been shipped I think (still waiting for my copy, RAMY) but this is the first time I have seen the rip online. I didn't want to wait until I got home to repost this, so below is some copy/pasta from CTR.
Finally, this split is almost out. Preorders will ship as soon as we receive our copies. One-sided 7" featuring one song from each band. "Eyelids" by Beau Navire and "I Don't Think I'm Glorybound, Bound, Bound" by Adobe Homes. Adobe Homes dabbles in a nifty group chant on this one and takes their chaotic sound up a notch. Beau Navire go a little heavier on "Eyelids." Still the same Beau Navire we know and love, only heavier. Did I mention it was a little bit heavier?

BUY THIS RECORD AND SUPPORT MY FRIENDS. The labels and bands involved are great people and I am beyond stoked regarding this vinyl. Word.

Beau Navire - Life Moves

Beau Navire, as many of you should know by now, is a screamo powerhouse containing members of Loma Prieta and Iwrotehiakusaboucannabalisminyouryearbook. I can also say that these guys are some of the nicest dudes you will meet. Anyways, they have been pretty busy recently with two splits on the way (Adobe Homes and Suffix), a European tour that will include Cry Me A River, and a one-sided full length on React With Protest and Moment of Collapse. Beau Navire posted a link to the streaming of their album on their facebook via the Moment of Collapse website.

Anyways, a good friend of mine gave me a downloaded copy of the new album, entitled "Life Moves". I wasn't going to put this up just because I have a feeling I will be asked to take it down, but if its floating around the internet already I don't see any harm with sharing it. I know that I plan on buying this album, and you should too. Help them get to Europe and stuff by buying the Adobe Homes split and the pre-orders(are they up yet) for this record.

Beau Navire delivers some of the most solid American Screamo music I have ever heard on this album. Incorporating elements from both their affiliated acts plus expanding on traditional screamo dynamics, Life Moves is going to really blow people away. This record can be lumped into any of the vast categories that tend to divide the emotional hardcore scene, making it accessible to any fan of the genre without causing the band to loose its edge and more raw elements. I have greatly enjoyed watching this band evolve, over the internet for the most part, from an obscure California group to one of the leading American Skramz acts. Below is the album, and if it gets taken down I will let you know. Word.

Pansori EP & other shit

Pansori has been really active recently, recording these three songs for three separate releases. Since "Eight Hundred Years of Silence" they have changed vocalists (originally it was the dude from Towers/Boat Water whos name is escaping me right now, now its Erik from Let's/ The Summer We Went West). Their songs have become alot more epic and melodic, which allows people who are fans of bands ranging from shit like Envy to The Appleseed Cast to enjoy their tunes. The songs on this cd are for a 7" with Edhochuli, the 5-way 12" on Bear Records and maybe something else but I don't know. Oh well. You really should download this because aside from being a really awesome band they are awesome people and really good friends of mine. Word.

I also wanted to take this opportunity too briefly talk about two other things. The first is that the lineup for The Fest 9 is posted up, and if you have the money to go you really should. The bands playing this year rule so hard, I really with that I could attend.

The second thing is that Punch and Loma Prieta are playing two New England shows mid-November. The first is at Charm City Art Space in Baltimore with Vaccine, and the second is at ABC No Rio in New York City. Once again, I wish that I was attending and I hope that anyone within driving distance attends.

Arse Moreira

So if I had to name my top five favorite bands, Arse Moreira would be amongst them. They play a style of screamo similar to bands like Eucalypt or Louise Cyphre. Their shit is incredibly chaotic and all over the place. One of the coolest things about this band is the fact that all of their releases have been compilations or splits. The bass player now plays in Te Lloraia un Puto Rio and was in charge of Escucha Records, although now he lives in Canada and runs Bluegrass Records. Arse Moreira put out splits with Kidcrash, Resurrectionists & Beneath Low Flying Planes. They have also been featured on the Emo Annihilation and Apocalypse and are on the first Connections 6-way split. A while back I found a "split" that they did with Loma Prieta, but I'm pretty sure it was never released. I put it below, but it sounds like its just two demos from each band that were lumped together. Hopefully Charley will read this and leave a comment explaining that shit. But anyways, below is everything they did except for the Emo-End-of-The-World shit, which can be found elsewhere on here and a link to a video of them playing a Halloween party or something. You should buy whatever records of theirs that you can find. Word.

Loma Prieta Discography 05-09/Punch LP

LOMA!
Loma Prieta

PUNCH
Punch

Well, seeing as these two bands share a member I figured I would post these two albums together.

You probably already know who both these bands are, if you haven't been living under a rock for the past few years.

Loma Prieta plays intense, riffy screamo that heralds back to the glory days, incorporating elements of bands like Honeywell, Ampere, and You and I, into a modern-day, refined package.

Punch is a vegan straightedge thrash/fastcore band from the Bay Area featuring a female vocalist. Between their Eyeless EP, released last year (which you can download here), and this year's self titled LP, these guys (and gal) are putting out some of the most refreshing, in your face hardcore of the decade.

I recently got a chance to catch Punch when they came through Baltimore on their summer tour. Charm City Art Space, a fairly small venue, as anyone who has been to a show there can tell you, was packed pretty full. The entire basement was crammed with kids, who for the most part, seemed to have showed up to see Punch play. They played first, which confused me just a bit, seeing as they were the touring band and Death Rats and Pulling Teeth are both from the immediate D.C./Baltimore metro area, but whatever. They opened the set with the first song from their new LP, "Don't Start". The energy in the room immediately changed, and everyone was either nodding their heads to the point of whiplash or dancing. The set was short, fast, and feedback-laden, and after about 15 minutes of sonic assault, front woman Meghan announced they were done. She had hardly reached the drum set by the time the crowd start asking for one more, and she made her way back to the mic, protesting only mildly by saying, "But it's so hot..." It was. They launched into "Convenience Store," a comment on the vegan lifestyle and one of the highlights of the Eyeless EP.

The Loma Prieta Discography is a Japanese import that was released for The Punch/Loma Prieta Japanese Tour earlier this year. It features the two tracks from the upcoming split with L'antietam (discussed briefly here, where you can glimpse the artwork for that release), their Last City LP, Matrimony 7" (featuring an unreleased track), Our LP is Your EP 12" (featuring an unreleased cover song), and their 2005 Demo CD-R. So, in short, everything but 2009's Dark Mountain LP.

Punch

Photobucket

Punch plays in-your-face hardcore punk! They also sing about things like veganism and I believe some if not all of the members are straightedge. This sounds like old school shit with a twist to me, and I love it. The band features a female vocalist and I would say that she kind of sounds like a female Jake Bannon (Converge). Punch features Val of Loma Prieta on drums.

To be honest, I don't really know much about hardcore punk like this and would really appreciate any suggestions on bands that sound similar/may have influenced Punch!

Sorry I don't have a bigger picture of the album art by the way!

Sailboats

Photobucket

Ok. Sailboats is one of those bands that existed for a very short amount of time, had an extremely small number of releases (try one demo, two songs), and is surrounded by this sort of enigmatic fog. In this post I am going to try and clear up some of that enigmatic fog.

The official Sailboats myspace states the following: two of sailboats died in a carcrash the other dudes are in loma prieta now our demo has two not four songs were not a christian band the "lost" record is not available for press

Yes, it's true that members of Loma Prieta were in Sailboats. Yes, it's true that the four song version of the demo that floats around the internet features two bizarre anonymous techno-esque songs for some reason. Yes, it's true Sailboats is not a Christian band, and there supposedly is a "lost record" - an EP apparently that will never be pressed, according to the band.

As for the car crash, that is where we have to speculate. When my band played a show with L'antietam this summer, I was talking to Derek (guitar/vocals) later that night at a party about music and Sailboats came up. He informed me that there was in fact no car crash and that the dudes from Sailboats were just kind of playing a practical joke and that they got a real kick out of the fact that everyone believes it. Now, before I get comments saying, "well how does he know?" etc etc etc I would say, "He knows because he is friends with Loma Prieta." (They're going on tour this January and releasing a split so check that shit out!)

Now, onto the music. Soundwise, Sailboats is really sort of similar to Loma Prieta except that Sailboats is just way more fucking brutal. Where Loma Prieta is sometimes more interested in the noodly guitar lines and disarming clean parts, Sailboats is more interested in simply ripping your fucking face off. These two songs have become a sort of cult classic for a reason, so download them!

Loma Prieta

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Loma Prieta is one of the sickest skramz bands out there, theyve really got that whole "being really good at music" thing down pretty nicely. theyve toured the u.s (at least once), and just spent a shitload of time in Europe after putting out Last City. They have three records out right now, but they are in the process of doing a split with L'antietam. BUY ALL OF THEIR SHIT FROM APE MUST NOT KILL APE, DISCOS HUEGELA AND ROK LOK!!!!!

Heres' a video to prove how awesome they are! This song is called "Welcome Spring Break 1989".
