So Sam Ray, the patron saint of Tumblr, just released a new Ricky Eat Acid album. Its called "Three Love Songs", but its more than three songs. Pretty funny man. I asked him if this sounded like all his other shit, and he poetically described his newest accomplishment as "like the other shit but better, but also gets hella hype up in the middle for a sec, like big shit". Straight from the horses mouth y'all.
I haven't listened to this yet because I haven't felt like taking a nap recently, but I'll get around to it soon. I've seen a good bit of his cronies and some mutual friends praising this shit, so I'm sure its good. Pitchfork can't be wrong, right? You can get it for free below, but you should give him some money for the "Skizz Memorial Fund", which is used to help yung thugs find Christ at the bottom of a bottle of syrup. Oh, he is gonna start playing REA live soon, like real soon. I heard NYC and Boston are the spots, but I'm sure you'll hear about it soon enough from other, more shits-giving parts of the internet. Word.
so this is an album i wrote and recorded solo pretty recently while taking a break from the julia brown studio sessions&stuff. i was initially planning to keep it kind of secret and sell physical copies of it at julia brown shows, since some of the songs might end up being julia brown songs later on.
however we found out recently that caroline (our viola player/singer) is sick and has to get multiple surgeries soon. that sucks. also she can't eat cake for like a long time which is awful. caroline's one of my best friends and one of the most talented people i know and it sucks she has to go through this and it sucks even more because i know it's a lot of money to get everything she needs done. i wanted to try and help her with everything so i figured i'd release this album now instead of waiting and hope that if you like it (or wanna be supportive) you'd pay for it. we set it up so whatever money donated here goes straight to carolines paypal to help pay for whatever medical stuff she needs. if you've followed me or my music for a while you know i don't like to ask for money but this is kind of a rare occasion. if you can't afford anything you can still download it but it'd be rad if you shared it i guess so maybe other people will see it. idk what to expect from it but honestly anything helps. thanks a lot. caroline's original quote was that she was "extremely sad" but she asked me to change it to "i am extremely appreciative to any amount donated, no matter how small" - sam
I'm pretty late in the game on this one, I suppose. I was introduced to Slam Gay via the internet, by Reid (of course), who was like "This is the dude who does Ricky Eat Acid". I was like "What the shit is Ricky Eat Acid" and then Reid explained it in a very roundabout way. I never listened to it. Then I was introduced to Teen Suicide and I was like "word this is cool", but now that I'm back in Maryland I have been talking to the lesser members of Teen Suicide / Julia Brown and thus Sam is sort of in my life. So I talked to Skizz about it a while ago and decided I would listen to Ricky. In case you are very thick, Sam Ray uses the moniker Ricky Eat Acid to make minimalist quasi-drone experimental whatever music, and he is the driving force behind the bands Teen Suicide and Julia Brown. Julia Brown is recording right now, actually, and I'm really siced to to go ham to Torts' sick bass lines, hashtag JUICED.
It would seem that REA is popular. Sam is internet famous because of it or something. Sometimes I see on Ricky plays on randos' and long distant homies' last.fms and stuff. Also, the mother fucker has like 10 releases. Flood the block, Birdman Style. The music seems to be more like soundscapes than "songs", but it doesn't matter because all of the tracks are generally different, with obvious similarities existing throughout individual albums. Its real dark bro, sounds like homie enjoys doing DrUgS. This shit is really cool chill out music, or like dark place music or whatever. He uses a variety of instruments which is a testament to his musical prowess, or rather, gives him more platforms to musically ejaculate onto the people who will inevitably listen to his stuff just because he is who he is. I give him shit, but I generally enjoy the dude. He makes me laugh because I don't take him as seriously as others do.
I heard that Torts and Skizz are getting interviewed for like an article or something that is going to be about Sam. I, personally, think that is fucking hilarious and demand that I get to see the finished product. I really wish that the person who is conducting this study on Mr. Gay would get in touch with me, because I will fuck that whole thing up with yellow journalism style propaganda. And all Sam will do is laugh.
On the real though, or at least, on the more serious, Sam is cool enough to fuck with, just dont stroke that lil dudes ego because I'm sure its chaffed by now. Teen Suicide was the shit, and Julia Brown is also dope, so check that shit out too and support them. Skizz needs gas money and Torts needs to pay for his hair product, so give the dudes some money. And support Ricky as well, obviously, even though he doesn't play live or anything. Word.
Julia Brown is a super chill band from Maryland that consists of the Teen Suicide kids, and I guess a bunch of their homies too. They say they are pop punk or something but I don't agree. Its like spaced out chill music, with a shit ton of instruments and stuff. Shits poppin though, on the real. I listened to it for the first time the other night when I couldn't sleep, and it was real nice. I guess they have been around for a while, but I hadn't heard about them until kind of recently when I met all those kids, and then I was talking to someone about how Maryland is killing it with music and they said something about JB doing some split on Topshelf. I guess that was when I checked them out for the first time, and by checked them out I mean I bugged Sam Ray until he gave me songs. Had to do the same thing with "Torts" to get the songs from that split thingy too.
I guess I should say something about that split: its a benefit for stopping violence against women or something like that, which is chill. If you have money you should pay for that release, its got one track from Julia, Old Grey, Modern Baseball and The Hundred Acre Woods each.
The JB album, To Be Close To You, is real dope. Its all lo-fi and grainy and shit, real warm and tender. I guess the dudes and their people also make other songs that I always see people putting on Facebook thats like 420 Love Songs or something. I don't really know what the hell it is, but here is a link to it. I can't find any videos, oh well. Below is their stuff, check it out and show the homies some love. Word.
Reid, the only person who ever does guest posts, did yet another.
Teen Suicide is a band from Maryland that plays this really dark, noisy emo punk shit. They just released a new record called "i will be my own hell because there is a devil inside my body" because that's the kind of shit that they do. Also, idiot mastermind Sam Ray of Ricky Eat Acid fame is in it, and you all know how "you get sick; you regret things" is capable of ruining your day.
Teen Suicide used to be just Sam, who recorded everything on "bad vibes forever" but then my homie Eric started playing drums and they put out "DC snuff film," which is one of my favorite things in a really long time. Super dark, noisy reverby pop punk songs for the most part, but they always throw in a few slow sad ones for good measure. The new record has all kinds of harmonies and string parts and shit. It's really good. All those releases plus an EP is here, but you should also check out their bandcamp and buy stuff like a decent person:
