Malady

Malady was a band from Virginia that was made up of people from Pg.99 and City of Caterpillar. They were a post-hardcore band that only released one album, but some people believe them to be the best of the Pg. 99 family of bands. Their songs are haunting and melodic. Super catchy. The best way I can describe them is a less technical, more melodic Verse En Coma. I guess that after this LP and the tour and stuff the band wrote more songs but the band broke up and the "songwriting backbone" got with two other dudes and did Verse En Coma. Pretty cool to listen to this LP then Rialto to see how the group evolved. I would imagine you can buy copies of this release on various formats from various people, so do that if you want. Members of this band are also involved in Pygmy Lush, so yeah. Download this LP if you don't have it already. Word.

Verse En Coma

Verse En Coma was a short lived band from Virginia, I guess. They are part of the extensive Pg. 99 family and only have one release as of now. Their Last.fm page says all that you need to know:
VERSE EN COMA was formed by the songwriting backbone of MALADY (Jeff Kane, Kevin Longendyke, Jonathan Moore) and joined by Darkest Hour/City of Caterpillar drummer (Ryan Parrish) and multi-talented vocalist Brian Markham. Most of the songs were written towards the end of Malady but re-vamped and enhanced with the joining of Parrish and Markham to the group. The results are an impressive and varied recording, which was engineered and executed by the band themselves over a several-year period.

Somewhere between the present day and unfortunate endings of Pg.99, City of Caterpillar and Malady, a “lost” recording was created but shelved for several years. Five dynamic tracks that collided with both artistic and industry red tape comprise the VERSE EN COMA debut release, “Rialto“. Finally though the dust has settled, the hurdles have all been jumped and “Rialto” will finally see the light of day as a dual-format 10″+CD release through Robotic Empire.

I couldnt find a video of a live performance, which sucks. I've been listening to this album really hard these past few weeks. I snagged it off some other blog, I forget which one though. Anyways, snag this, then snag that shit from Robotic Empire. Word

Pg. 99

IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO PG. 99 IS THAN I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. EVERYONE KNOWS SOMEONE WITH A PG. 99 TATTOO. I heard they took at least one prostitute on tour with them once. Their music and merch can still be bought by all of their various labels (like Robotic Empire or Magic Bullet).

Members went on to play in a shit ton of bands including the following:
Pygmy Lush
Tideland
Darkest Hour
Ghastly City Sleep

Below is a video from their set in Berkeley, CA in 2001 and all 14 documents.

City of Caterpillar

City of Caterpillar was a hardcore/punk band from Richmond, Virginia that broke up in 2003. Their sound varies to a certain degree, but they commonly have dramatic buildups and driving melodies. Post-rock was obviously an influence on the bands song structure. The band shares/shared members with Pg.99, Stop It!!, Malady, Darkest Hour and Ghastly City Sleep.
This post was originally going to be on the first on this blog, but it took me up until a few days ago to find their split with System 2600, and for that I thank The Screamo Dictionary. Below is everything they ever put out, including unreleased tracks and live sets. The video is from the University of Deleware.
