Orlock

Orlock, not to be confused with Graf Orlock, was a female fronted screamo band from Richmond, VA. They were around in the late '90s and someone in this band went on to be in Song of Zarathustra. I could only find two of their releases, but I think that might be their entire catalog.

Orlock played some pretty tight dark hardcore. The vocals are sick as fuck. Orlock is anything to fucking amazing, but they are a solid hardcore band. I really like this band because, aside from playing awesome heavy shit, they also have a good amount of weird noisy stuff going on.  For example, the song "Imposter" is like four and a half minutes, but the first three minutes are noise and field recordings. All of the recordings are kind of low quality, but it suits the songs well. In my opinion the second album is the superior, but both releases are really tight. Check it out. Word.

Lyburnum

Lyburnum is a hardcore band from LA. They are a two piece who share a drummer with Ten Thousand Leagues. They are pretty heavy and dark, but have a good bit of sceamo and punk influence. I really like their EP or demo or whatever, especially they last two songs. Just really great moshing music. They are going on tour with Ten Thousand Leagues, which starts really soon (dates here), so go check them out. Stoked on this band. Word.

Song of Zarathustra was a sick as fuck hardcore/screamy band from Iowa. Aside from ripping it hard as shit, they were known for being like one of the only screamo bands to known how to use keys. They used a drum machine for a minute too. Yeah dude. In that fatty quote below I present to you the band's intense ass biography, provided by Last.fm. Got all their shit below too, with a lil video that's from a reunion show. Word.

Song of Zarathustra originated in Sioux City, IA during March 1997. The founding members were Trever McInnis, Travis Bos, James Munsen and a Roland R8 drum machine which was later replaced with David Seaman (ex-Nudibranch, ex-Orlock) on drums. For the next year, SOZ toured the greater part of the U.S. and disbanded in 1998 when David moved back to his hometown of Richmond, VA. From 1998-2000, James and Travis moved to Minneapolis, MN and formed The Book of Dead Names (featuring members of Cadillac Blindside, The Evening Rig, The Cardinal Sin and The Crush) while Trever resided in Oakland, CA forming the Kill In Me (also, featuring members of C- Blindside and Angel Hair). David formed the band Hot New Dance Hits with members of his previous band Nudibranch. March of 2000, SOZ decided to regroup. They toured immediately with the original line-up (Trever, Travis, James / Roland R8) and later recorded “The Birth of Tragedy” (Troubleman Unlimited) with Mark Jorgensen (Book Of Dead Names &; Infinity Dive) on drums. After the release of “The Birth of Tragedy”, SOZ toured most of the U.S. on many occasions and set course to tour Europe for its first time in 2001. In late 2001, SOZ parted ways with long time bass player James Munsen. Mark Shaw(Khayembii Communique, The Cardinal Sin) filled his place and Tad Kubler (formerly of Lifter Puller & currently The Hold Steady) joined as second guitarist. The new line up hashed out new songs as well as adding some life to songs that were written for the up and coming album “A View from High Tides” which was also released on Troubleman Unlimited. Early 2002 brought SOZ back to Europe for its second time. During the summer of 2002, Tad parted ways with SOZ to move to N.Y. and eventually forming The Hold Steady with old Lifter Puller bandmate Craig Finn. Due to several shifts in line up’s, personal differences, etc. the remaining members decided to call it quits in January of 2003.

Caffeine Patch finally made an EP! This band is made up of dudes who live at the Whacky Castle in Allston, MA. One of the dudes in the band runs Bear Records and another one of the dudes used to be in The Saddest Landscape. Mad cred, I know. They make super awesome, dirty hardcore. I saw them play once in Allston and it was sick as shit, I'm so fucking excited for these guys. I just listened to their entire EP and it is so fucking awesome, download the shit out of this right now. Also, you can buy this EP on tape via We Rise Records, so go do that. Republic of Freedom Fighters were a Canadian emo/hardcore band from the '90s. Super depressing lyrics. Really tight sound, somewhat typical of the late '90s emocore movement, but still hella original. They reminded me of Owltian Mia only harder. They have four releases, and I could only find two of them (splits with Twenty Seven Hours and Third World Planet). I did, however, manage to get my hands on the RoFF tracks from the splits I couldn't find, all of it is below. The members were in a few other bands, including Swan Lake and Breakwater. One of the dudes was in The Para-Medics, and I'm pretty sure one of the other guys was in another dope band from Chicago but I'm not sure. Burn Idols

Burn Idols are a super awesome hardcore band from Los Angeles, CA. I met these guys when they went on tour with Calculator and then got to kick it with them real hard when mnwa went to California. Best dudes.

Their sound is kinda really sludgy and pv, super fucking dark. Doom. When I saw them they were a three piece but I'm pretty sure they got a second gutiarist recently. I think homeboy is on the new record, which slays btw. I bump their older stuff all the time and was waiting to chug them because I knew they were writing new material. Their drummer recently sent me their new album "Theodicy" and it fucking rips. This band just stays super heavy and head-bang-worthy. They duel vocals are perfect. I have heard them be compared to Spazz and stuff like that. I see it.

So yeah, below is their newest effort, plus their two previous releases and a video. Please please please download all of this, especially the new jaint. I heard they are going to try to press Theodicy, so when that gets on wax I'm going to put up a link to it so people can support my friends. Get heavy real quick. John Cota & Ten Thousand Leagues

So I have been sitting on this shit for like a month. I don't know for sure but I think I was given these tracks like right when they were finished. Both of these bands from California are somewhat fledgling but are made up of veterans of the game. The John Cota dudes are from the bay/Oakland I think. I know that one of the Cotas was in Versions, who I got to see/play with in Delaware a while back. Ten Thousand Leagues are from greater Los Angeles right? Those dudes were in rather popular bands such as Moldar, Calculator and ColorChromatic. Their bassist, Hannah, was in Lautrec but she is leaving the band I think. I know she isn't going to be on their upcoming tour, being replaced by my boy Andrew of MOLDSURI fame.

So yeah, tour. Both of these bands are going on tour real soon, but not together. I think its kind of really silly but at the end of the day I don't really care because I still get to see both bands and kick it hard. Ten Thousand Leagues are doing the entire country, while John Cota are doing this little mini guy:

Now, about this split. First of all, one of the better releases to come out lately. I have been kinda slackin off with Chug because I've been busy, but also because nothing has really got me stoked enough to post it in a while. I've gotten some good shit, and if anyone has gotten ahold of me and given me something and I said I'll post it I will, but I'm not that motivated right now. No offense, just keeping it real. I've been waiting to post this shit for a long time, so last night when Max gave me the green light I got pretty stoked and kind of regretted half assing a post the other night just to keep up with the Jones'. The only lame thing is that I was hoping to get that exclusive first post shit, but I failed. Google the bands and you get a mediafire link. Idiot. But then I saw it on another blog posted like a week ago. Broken heart.

The split starts off with John Cota. If you have never heard them before, its harder screamo that sounds like some of the stuff going on in Europe. Its dark, but not sludgey or grindy or anything. Nice skrimz dynamics all around. They get really heavy alot but its always interesting. They get down with the chugs, which I can always respect. Dynamically they sound like a heavier, less technical Daitro or Aussitot Mort or something. Maybe Who Calls So loud, musically, is kind of similar at some points. I don't know, it's just nice to hear a screamo band that isn't doing the fast euro twinkly techy stuff. I really like the recording quality as well. I hope that the band recorded it themselves. I also put their demo ep thing down at the bottom as well. I got the split because I was asking around for more John Cota shit and I was gonna post this band a long ass time ago.

The second half of the split is all Ten Thousand Leagues. Super fucking hard. Super fucking heavy. Their side starts with some sound clip and I don't know what it is from. Ten Thousand draw more on old school hardcore and punk dynamics, so their stuff is less screamo and more hardcore in nature, although they do have some skrumz elements floating around. Again, recording quality on this side of the split is pretty really dope. One of the better heavy bands that are playing right now. Heavier for us emo pussies, but not metalcore or anything you know? It's like moshing but without the basketball shorts. It's okay to mosh in your American Apparel if you want to. You can even two-step.

I like this split because it isn't flashy. Both bands produce solid tracks and sound good separately, as a cohesive side and as a while album. Although I must admit that I kind of prefer the John Cota side, both bands fucking kill it so hard on this split. Kill em dead. "You marks are feelin to hate it". So please, please, please, a thousand times please, download the fuck out of this and tell your entire crew how good this is. Then go and get a fucking copy from RADICAL FRIENDS, or, even better, go see these bands on their tours and get the split then. Below is the split, the John Cota demo thing, and a video that is unrelated. Oh yeah, Ten Thousand Leagues put their demo on a split 12 inch with Archetypes. The Archetypes tracks are recycled from their album "Steps". You can buy that somewhere on the internet, I don't really know where aside from Olhar De Vidro. I would imagine Ten Thousand would have them on tour. Anyways, that's below as well.

Cowboys Are Indians are a totally under-rated screamo band from New Hampshire. Maybe the reason they aren't that well known is because they are from New Hampshire. I first heard about these dudes, as many of you probably did, when I got the split they did with Cassettes on Fire a while back. I picked up that shit in Lancaster when Cassettes toured with The Caution Children. Speaking of The Caution Children, they are going on tour with We Were Skeletons real soon so check that shit out.

After I heard that split, I remember getting on the internet and trying to find more of their stuff. I wasn't a master manipulator of the internet at that point so I didn't find shit except for their myspace. I couldn't really find anything on them so I just thought they broke up or something. I'm almost positive I mySpace messaged them for shows up in New Hampshire but nothing ever worked out.

Recently however, I was talking to Rob from Bear Records and he was telling me about how he is going to put out this hot new Cowboys Are Indians LP. At first I was like "Fuck yeah this band is still a band" and then I was like "Yo give me them tracks". I don't think he gave me anything.

When we went on tour we got to play with Cowboys Are Indians in Allston with Caffeine Patch. I was so fucking stoked all day about seeing them finally. I was kind of surprised when I talked to people at the show and people were saying that they never listened to Cowboys, so I was talking them up and shit. I think that they ended up playing last that night, but I don't really remember.

They fucking killed it. I couldn't tell you if they played new shit or old shit, but every song was tight. It isn't super technical, although the drummer rips it the fuck up. Duel vocals are goin' on which sound nice together. No bass player and two guitarists. Kind of sounds like Storm The Bastille, maybe. Surprisingly European sounding without it sounding like a generic imitation, you know? Still really pretty punk and hardcore though.

For serious, once you hear this band you are going to kick yourself in the fucking face for not getting into this shit sooner. Sohns (say it like suns) is a five piece hardcore band from Texas. They just got done with their tour which overlapped with 424/7 on like seven occasions. It was the shit. On this tour, however, their lineup was changed a little. Their bassist couldn't make the tour for whatever reason, so one of their guitarists played bass. Ironically, that fool is some jazz trained bass wiz (THE WHIZ PLAYS THE BASS) and he fucking slayed it.

Before I talk about their actual tunes I need to say something about their gear and their tone. Honestly, their equipment was insane. Not insane like 3 pedal boards, but insane like "holy fuck everything sounds perfect". Best bass tone I have ever heard. The guitar was loud as fuck and surprisingly technical for a band like this. Obviously some parts had to be altered due to the switch from two guitarists to one, but still. And of course, the drum set that they use is fucking amazing. I don't know what kind it is because I don't really care, but it sounded so fucking good at every single venue I saw them in. All their equipment was top notch (when it was working correctly). Oh yeah, they were loud as shit too. Blue Letter loud status, but with like 20 less speakers. My ears hurt just thinking about how loud they are as a five piece.

Their tunes are dark. Very dark and driving. Its heavy as shit at times but never like sludgy or anything. They also throw in weird shit here and there, normally percussion related. I never listened to these dudes before tour, so I asked some people what they sounded like. No one really gave me a good description, except one person said it sounded like the music that would be playing in Hell. That sounded pretty cool to me. Before we left four tour Sohns played at Barclay House and some people and I walked over to check it out. At first I was more focused on Alex's stage antics to really listen to the music, but those fucking drums were spot on. These records are good, don't get me wrong, but you have to see Sohns live to get the full effect. They are alot heavier live. At first, like first song I saw, I thought Alex's vocals were kind of whatever, but the more I listened to them and saw them the more they really grew on me.

They have been a band for a really long time, like five years or something like that. They used to have a girl in their band, and that is why the bands name is "sohns" and not "sons". That's what I heard at least. Their most recent recordings, which is "to ward it off and drown it out", were recorded at that Red Room place up in Seattle where Native recorded Wrestling Moves. Dope huh? The other thing down there for download is a split that they did with The Grasshopper Lies Heavy. They are really dope too, hadn't heard them til I got this split but it is really cool.

Touring with these guys was a complete blast. Best dudes. Best tunes. Best times. I also fell head-over-heels in love with their merch girl. They are trying to find labels to put out some of their shit on vinyl eventually, so if you put out records please please please listen to this and get ahold of them if you like what you hear. I really hope that they get pressed because this shit would sound so bomb on wax. Below is their two above mentioned albums and a video of them playing in California this year (I spy a Suri). Raein has just released their new full length LP, Sulla Linea D'orizzonte Tra Questa Mia Vita e Quella Di Tutti for free download on their website. The band has continued to progress forward in the vein of Nati da Altri Padri, the band's previous EP release. Sulla Linea D'orizzonte Tra Questa Mia Vita e Quella Di Tutti (2011)

Calculator

Calculator are a really tight hardcore band from the Los Angeles area I think. Isn't it something like they go to school all over but are from LA? I don't know really, but I think that is correct. This band plays a style of hardcore that is influenced by multiple genres, obviously, and sounds similar to fellow California natives Touche Amore and Comadre, kind of. I mean there are the like harder hard parts, then the pretty parts, and some driving parts here and there. The new shit has a really fucking heavy part. I remember last summer around the 4th of July I booked these guys a show in Maryland and after the show I was smoking a blunt with most of this band and the dudes in Burn Idols when the guitarist of Calculator and I started taking about being in bands and shit. I don't remember the entire conversation but I do remember that he was talking about how the point of being in a band like this is to come up with really intricate music, shit that is challenging to play, and just get the songs on lock-down. Musical progression and shit. I thought that was really cool, and I think about that when I listen to Calculator. I still think that they generally put the vocals up a lil too high in the mix, but thats just me. The instrumentation is fucking boss, and sometimes its hard to really hear that shit, especially if you are using jankity laptop speakers.

So, below are two links for all of their material. There is a link for These Roots Grow Deep, which is a collections LP of all their shit from their past EP's and splits and what not. I think that they have had a shit ton of releases that culminated in These Roots. My friend has this on vinyl and it sounds fucking sick. The other link is for their hot new shit, New Forms. I mean that label has always ruled, but she is cornering the market on this good ass California music. And, for real, shes a really cool person. Really nice.

Calculator is going to raffle off a test press of New Forms between people who get that pre order, so all you collectors should jump on that shit. I don't know whats good with the head count on Roots, but you should also get that shit before it sells out. They have some other gear, like a shirt and a monster patch, that is pretty wrad.

For real. For real though. Buy their shit online so they have them gas muns. Go see them on tour with The Saddest Landscape west coast kids. You know you want to go to these shows because TSL hasnt been over here in like 7 years or something.

These Roots Grow Deep

Kid Dynamite

If you don't like Kid Dynamite you might want to check to make sure you still have a pulse. Featuring members of flagship punk acts like None More Black, Lifetime, Paint It Black, and the Loved Ones, Kid Dynamite broke open new ground in the hardcore scene with the the release of their debut LP in 1998, the year after Lifetime's final LP, Jersey's Best Dancers, was released. Guitarist Dan Yemin's trademark buzz saw power chord mentality and Jason Shevchuk's trademark vocal style have influenced an unfathomable amount of bands.

2000's Shorter, Faster, Louder was a more streamlined and polished approach to the band's song and featured classic tracks like "Cheap Shot Youth Anthem". Shevchuk's departure to return to school was followed by the subsequent break up of the band and a release of a compilation of b-sides entitled, of course, Cheap Shot Youth Anthem. The band has played two reunion shows and, thank goodness, Yemin is still very active between Lifetime reunions and touring and writing for Paint It Black.

Here's an e-mail I thought I might never get. Fortunately, when I opened my e-mail today this was sitting in my inbox:

da story:
after my previous band Plaguewielder split, i still had a bunch of riffs leftover and wanted to keep making evil shit. Fortunately (for me) Dawn Treaders lineup at the time split up and Jeremy wasnt doing anything so the two of us got together and came up with the idea of a recording an album as a 2 piece, we got Tony from plaguewielder in on it and our friend sine jensen on the violin and recorded the 5 songs that are attached in this email. After playing the 5 song cd to a few of our friends we were able to find a drummer in Ben Jones from Heaviness of the Load and the 4 of us recorded the self titled 7" (mediafire link). Bens brother Brent joined the band on 3rd guitar and we began recording an 11 song full length 12" to be released on dysphoria and midnight sea records, unfortunately we split while in the studio and the album is still waiting to be finished. we've been talking lately about getting back together and jamming but so far nothing...

thank you so much for your interest, it was really difficult to put so much energy into a band and have it be so short lived (1-2 years), we were never able to tour very much with our 7" (only a few weekends) so our shit never really got the attention i wish it had. Ive just recently gotten into the music blog scene and chug life is incredible, keep doin what you do!!! thank you guys again,

Diablero was a badass hardcore band from Baltimore. Their 7" is one of my favorite records; plenty of crusty, pissed off, in your face riffs and intense vocals. Great stuff, definitely worth the download.

Magrudergrind

Let's be honest: corporate sponsorship and punk don't mix. The two have about as volatile a relationship as potassium and water.

It's not surprising when bands like All Time Low and their neo-pop-punk Myspace generation kin sell out; they probably never hid their full intentions to sell out from their first practice together. For the sake of argument, let's just dismiss these aforementioned bands for what they are: thinly veiled pop artists disguised as "punk" or "emo" musicians.

In the alternate universe most readers of this blog probably live in, punk is an all-encompassing word that can mean a million different things and sound like a million different sounds. DIY releases, small-print labels run by kids out of their garages, low-fi tape duplications, anti-corporate lyrics, basement shows: these are just a few of the things that probably come to mind.

A few things that probably don't come to mind are the Toyota subsidiary Scion, corporations sponsoring metal concerts, and Magrudergrind, the legendary D.C. based grindcore band, putting out records on Scion's A/V record label.

Yes, you read correctly. Grindcore giants Magrudergrind's, (who have toured all over the world and released countless records over their long tenure as a well respected, anti-fascist, highly opinionated, DIY band over the years), new Grind Crusher 10" has been released for free by Scion A/V, who have hosted metal concerts and festivals featuring the likes of Trash Talk and Mastodon (not personal favorites of mine, I'd like to mention).

It certainly seems a far cry from the group who released an album called Don't Support Humanitary Aid Led By the Church. And the Scion logo isn't exactly hidden away in a corner on the insert or something; it's featured prominently at the bottom center of the record's front cover.

However, before we delve any further into why this might legitimately make any Magrudergrind fan jealous, let's take one step back.

There's really only one problem with any hardcore elitist who's attempting to talk shit on one of D.C.'s most well known bands for selling out: this record fucking shreds. And with song titles like "Incapacity Reigns" and "Conditioned Minds" it doesn't exactly sound like lead vocalist Avi has suddenly had a change of heart about his no-bullshit, anti-fascist, anti-scene politics, anti-capitalist values.

The album clocks in at somewhere around eleven minutes, and every single one of them seems to carry the band forward from their previous release, 2009's self titled LP. From the newly acquired production value to the hip-hop interludes that seem to have become a staple of the band's sound as they move forward, even from the guitar solo (?!?!) on the album's closing track, the five minute plus long "Cognition".

As bizarre as it may seem that out of all bands, of out any scene, Magrudergrind has put out a record via Scion A/V, they haven't suddenly started writing cheese metal music all the sudden.

And as a huge corporation, Toyota might not have the best of reputations, but we're not exactly supporting them if we take them up on their offer to download this album for free, are we? Or by supporting the band in any way shape or form.

I guess the best way for anyone to form an opinion, in this case, would probably be by letting the music speak for itself.
