Adult Swim Single Series 2013

Yo, someone who works for Adult Swim really knows their shit when it comes to whats hot with the kids. It's dope that they are featuring Lil B, Kitty, and Dan Deacon to get them cool cats roped in, and I mean I wasn't super surprised to see most of the names on the roster for the compilation. We can talk about selling out or blowing up or whatever but I mean are you honestly surprised that Mykki Blanco is getting some spot light? I'm not.

I am, however, surpised that Lighning Bolt and Pig Destroyer are on. The LB song just went up and im not really feeling it, but its okay because I'm jaded (I watched The Power of Salad last night). The best part about this release is that both Madlib and Viktor Vaughn are on. I really appreciate that shit and take it as a nod to the old Adult Swim heads. The only reason I'm even really stoked about this release in general is the addition of Viktor.

And the Kitty song is catchy:


Adult Swim is hosting all the tracks and putting songs up one at a time, so yalls gotta wait for that Pig Destroyer. Check it out though, its pretty dope. If you have never gotten music from Adult Swim you should jump on that shit, because like I said, their music department has been steady killing it for a hot minute. Word.

Epilogue of a Car Crash - A Tribute to Orchid

Ok, so by now I'm sure most of you have heard at least some of the tracks off of this album, if not the entire thing. It has been out for a hot minute and I have seen this on some other blogs so I figured I would post this in case some people don't have it or havn't heard it. If Dog Knights wants me to take it down I will, but until then I will keep this up here. I hope they let me keep it up because it is already on the web. But I totally understand.

Alot of people have strong feelings about this album, but I'm not going to get into that because this is not the place to do so. This record is exactly what it sounds like: a compilation of Orchid covers. Some of the songs are really cool, others are whatever, but that doesn't really matter because the idea is fucking sick.

A shit ton of my friends and their bands are on this release. Pretty much all of the bands are awesome. There are some songs that sound just like the originals, you know, like they did it to sound like Orchid, while other tracks are the particular band's take on an Orchid song. You know? We (mnwa) were asked to be on the release, but we had to decline the offer because we couldn't record in time. We had mixed emotions about the idea because on one hand we all fucking love Orchid and it would be awesome to pay homage to such an influential band and it would be the shit to be on a release with so many homies and awesome bands. On the other hand, we knew that we could never do a cover of ANY of their songs that would be on par with the original and didn't want to potentially fuck up a sick song, if that makes sense. And honestly, we didn't want to potentially get shit from screamo old heads and purists who would turn up their nose to the release as a whole. I know that sounds fucking lame but its something that was brought up.

Anyways, like I mentioned above, most of the bands on here are fucking sick and really good friends of mine, and I respect the shit out of all of them for paying their respect to their roots. Even if any of the songs are not "as good" as the original, they are still sick songs. It is pretty easy to fuck up a song in this circumstance, but I mean if you do it "right" then it will still sound good, just different. I don't know. I really like the idea and I like the release as a whole. Its nothing more or less than cool. Anyways, I got it down below so scoop it up. You can buy copies from Dog Knights Productions, but I think it is really fucking expensive because of shipping. There are package deals that make it more worth the money, but also you can buy the digitals from the label's bandcamp.

Funeral Sounds Records Winter Sampler

Two kids I know via the internet run this label / review site called Funeral Sounds. Once I started doing shit again one of the little dudes sent me this sampler to "review", which I don't feel like doing because I would have to talk about each band. So I'll just say this: there are some pretty good songs on this release. I try not to be a dick on here and say negative things, so I'm not going to get into which tracks on here I think are "better" than others, but just know that this sampler has some cool tracks. There are acoustic jams, noodle jams, post hardcore jams, and that kind of stuff. Funeral Sounds put out their friends' records and stuff, which is legit. Check stuff out, give the little dudes money when you can so that they can, in turn, afford to put out more releases. Yet another low effort post brought to you by insomnia. Word.

Friends For Life Records - PDX2011

So a kid I met a while ago has a label based out of Portland called Friends For Life that is putting out zines and tapes. He was telling me that he is going to be putting out some new jaints from Carrion Spring and Leaster Freemon in the near future, so when those are out you should pick them up if you are into those bands. They just put out a compilation/teaser/sampler whatever that is similar in idea to the 75:24 compilation put out by Tickle Butt. They put it up for free download but also put this shit on tape, which is the labels first release. Friends For Life are also doing a distro, and if you buy this sampler you get a free hand screened Oker cd.

PDX2011 is a compilation tape made up of 14 bands that are all friends from the Portland area. The Tracklisting is as follows:

Alright so all the bands on this compilation are good enough to give the album at least one complete listen. Alot of genres are on this release, and you may very well not enjoy some of the songs. I think that out of all the bands on here the ones that really stuck out for me were Sloths, Cower, and Oker. I have the Oker cd and have been meaning to post it up here, but this song is so good. I'm calling it so hard: Oker is going to be a big deal, and I hope it is sooner rather than later. As for Cower, I had heard about them alot from people and this was my first time listening to it and I was disappointed with the fact that I couldn't really get into it. On the other hand, like Cower I have heard alot about Sloths, and that shit blew me away. Was not expecting that at all and I really really dig it. Kotten Dik is tight as shit too.

Overall this is a super solid compilation. I think that everyone, no matter what their preferred style of music is, will be able to find some shit on here that they really enjoy. Alot of dope stuff going on in Portland and it seems like no one is really giving them too much attention on a national scale. Some real talent is kicking it in PDX these days and I'm stoked on all those dudes right now. Really good people, really good times, please please please download this and then buy it from FFL's big cartel. Only like 125 of these things are going to be made and if you wait around you probably aren't gonna be able to get your hands on this shit. Keep a look out for Friends For Life Records in the tape and zine world. Word.

PDX2011

We Were Skeletons Again

So uh, We Were Skeletons (who are on tour with the Caution Children right meow) are on two new releases. The first is a 4 way split with Florence & Libby, Kids and Paxton which is a ten year anniversary thing for Square of Opposition. The second is a Topshelf Records 2011 Label Sampler that has like over 60 bands on it. Its such a fucking big compilation, but thats fine now that we live in the future and you can just download everything.

Now about that split. I only listened to it one time through, right now, so don't really take too much stock in what i have to say about it. I haven't ever listened to Florence & Libby, but I'm not really digging it too much. I don't really like the vocals that much. I have also never listened to this band Kids, but I like their songs on this release. Short punk songs are always pretty cool. Nothing too new or mind blowing, but its pretty cool. Both the We Were Skeletons Songs are pretty dope. They sound alot different from their previous material, but thats always an interesting thing. Its not on the same scale, but its like when Kidcrash and Raein switched their sound up and some people were like "this is sick" and other people were like "merp merp I only like the old stuff". Its cool though because I was totally the second person for a minute. But these Skeletons songs aren't drastically different. Still punk music, but they are straying away from the screamo sound of their full length and the split they did with us and going more in a post punk direction. Its funny because every other band on this release has like 5 songs but WWS has two. All their songs have Moleman in the title. He's a cool kid. The last band on this is Paxton, and I think I have listened to them before. Its pretty cool, more post punk stuff. Again, not really my cup of tea but its a nice listen. You should get that pre order by the way and support all these bands.

So the second thing on here is that Top Shelf super sampler. There are 68 bands on here, but only 23 are actually on the label. I guess that means that the label has worked with them, because they are "family". That means the remaining 45 bands on this thing are their friends. There are some big names on this release, but from what I can tell nothing "new". I'm not going to list all the bands and stuff but you can check out the list here. Now, one thing about this release that you should know, besides the fact that it is really dope, is that you can get it for free from Topshelf. You just go to their website or any of their social networking sites and "like" the release. I think. You either like the release or the label. I know if you tweet and twit you can get it for free too. This is a pretty cool way to get an album because, you know, its free, but I think its kind of funny that you have to tweet and like something to get it. If they want me to take this down so they get more tweets and likes I will gladly take this down. Go buy stuff from Topshelf because they are pretty cool dudes and put out some cool stuff. The album is so fucking big I put it into three files. MASTER OF THE INTERNET SOLVES ALL PROBLEMS.

Below are the two albums in three files. Pre order the one, and then go like the other. Support all the labels the best you can. Its summer and everyone is touring and shit and I know it can be a pain in the ass to get money together to pay for shows and buy records when you have a tight budget, but its going to a good cause. Even if you can't give anyone money you should still go to some shows this summer because it kind of sucks playing to an empty room. I haven't posted any videos in a while it feels, so here is a completely unrelated video that I have been bumping to death.

The Third Memory was a French screamo band. Real good shit, one of my favorite bands right now. The following is from their myspace:

This was decided after Julien's (guitar) decision to move to Tokyo, Japan. The last songs composed by the band are not planned to be recorded for now. No tour is planned either, but any change will be announced on our myspace page.

The Saddest Landscape

So The Saddest Landscape came out of retirement a while back and everyone flipped their shit. I had the chance to play a show with them in Delaware and I was blown away by their drummer (who I believe is a new addition?) and how fucking awesome their bassist is. Mike is one of the coolest dudes ever. I actually got the chance to kick it with him again when I went up to Boston earlier this fall, which was really cool.
I'm sure that anyone reading this knows who The Saddest Landscape is, seeing as they are one of the older screamo acts. Since they are back in action I suppose you could say that they are one of the longest running screamo bands around, but their break lasted like seven years or something. I never really got super into TSL, but I always liked their music. If you really have no idea who this band is, their sound is similair to post-rock screamo bands like City of Caterpillar, A Day in Black & White and Pianos Become the Teeth. This year alone they have released three albums as of now, two of which are splits and one is a full length. They also were featured on the newest Connections compilation. Below is everything that they have put out, as far as I can tell. They play shows and shit again, so go check that out, and please make sure that you give The Saddest Mike a high five. Moment of Collapse is kicking some much ass this fall, releasing three rediculous albums: Connections Part II 12", Arse Moreira & Resurrectionists split 6" and Capsule & Furnace split 7". The first two have already made their way to the internet, and into my hot little hands. The Capsule/Furnace piece just came out yesterday I believe, so when I find it I'll throw it up here. MOC010: Connections 6way split Part II

This is the second part of the 'Connections' Series. This time with Suis La Lune, The Saddest Landscape, Captain Your Ship Is Sinking, Kias Fansuri, Isaiah and Adorno.
The idea behind this release didn´t changed. 6 bands from 6 different countries celebrating the connections that can be built up by the possibilities of diy - movement. The Cover artwork was designed by Sebastian Weiß, who also gave the first part of this series the awesome look. The second part includes pastel-green colored vinyl and a big sized poster with lyrics, words and statements from the bands concerning, how they think about diy, making music and in which way they are connected to these ethics. On the other side of the Poster you`ll get another awesome design by Sebastian Weiß. This piece of vinyl contains around 50 minutes of connected and 100% unreleased music. Each of the 515 copies is hand numbered.

Suis La Lune starts this compilation. They give two great songs. First one starts with some kind of little intro which flows into the first brilliant song which proof that this band found their sound and know what they are doing. beautiful melodies, sometimes distorted sometimes clean, guided by spoken, screamed and sung vocals. The second track follows directly after the first one without taking a break or even a second of silence. This song is a little bit calmer and your ears will be caught by a brilliant songwriting including melodies, which won´t leave your mind for a while.

Next band is The Saddest Landscape, which are finally active again. After some years of silence back again, without loosing a spark of energy and passion. They contribute two songs, one which is totally new and another one which was previous released as "the temptation that is you" but this time rerecorded as a "forgiveness-version". The first track is one of the harsher songs they wrote and it offers you an idea about how The Saddest Landscape could sound on their next album. The second song is calmer and reminds you back to the time when this band started playing music. An ear-catching melody, which is played in a drive that makes sure that people who are into this kind of music will be attentive. What is characteristic for both songs is Andy`s significant voice. Like in the recent past, this is one of the distinctive features. All in all two songs that bring you the beauty and the beast which is anchored in this band.

Last band on side a is Netherlands Captain, Your Ship Is Sinking. This song was recorded in the same session, they recorded their songs for the split 12" with Mio. The song builds up itself for two minutes before there is some kind of breakdown. Spoken words and a simple melody are filling this part. Thereafter the main/end part starts. Catchy dynamic melodies and a very good drumming characterize this part. After around 7 minutes one of the best CYSIS songs ends.

The B-side starts with Kias Fansuri. These guys contribute their final 4 songs to this compilation. these songs are really the best ones, they`ve ever wrote. you really hear that kind of kias-typical sound and songwriting, but this time it sounds like this made a really progress and the output is awesome. you would miss the chaotic kias parts in this recordings. this songs have a clear and good structure. the drumming on this recordings is really awesome. it is pushing everything forward and has a simple but dynamic way to do it... you really will love the songs, especially their last song here is great.

The Isaiah songs sound like this are two missing songs from their last album. Expect really good Isaiah quality. changing between fast, chaotic parts to slower melodic parts. vocals screamed and spoken. you really can compare this to many heroic bands playing hardcore/screamo and it would perfectly fit on some kind of mixtape with them ;)

Adorno mark the endpoint of this record. Their sound still develops more and more in the direction of post punk/hardcore. They contribute two songs as well and do a great job. Very forward rocking guitars, the high frequency voice, solid bass lines and really smooth played drums bring once again the typical Adorno-sound to this release. The second song, which is called "connections", brings this great record to the end.

MOC012: Resurrectionists / Arse Moreira split 6"

Latest output of Resurrectionists and the last songs from Arse Moreira pressed on a wonderful 6inch vinyl. Resurrectionists start on side a with a slow beginning intro. After around two minutes you ll hear, what you ve expected. Fast, dark and down tuned hardcore/grind/whatever. Well written melody(!) lines, extreme fast drums and this lovely mix of bright and dark vocals. You ll have no break to take a breath. One of their best songs so far. Arse Moreira will contribute two songs to this split. This songs were formally planed to be used for a split with Louise Cyphre. Both songs are really good. Technical and fast played. Wow!. Sometimes they sound like older louise stuff on this songs. Too bad, that this band calls is quit some time ago.
