"The Sound of Young America"

I don't know if this record is out yet, but all the songs are recorded and online. I'm close friends with three of these bands, so I'm really stoked on this release even though I think the name is lame as hell. The four way split consists of Itto, Innards, Calculator, and Capacities. Flannel Gurl is putting this joint out, so stream it and then buy it.

Never Young

+

Never Young is the definition of Kali. This band is Nik and Chris' baby brain child, and oozes irie sun bathing vibes. So chill. So kush. Members of Calculator and No Tongue (even though I still prefer tongue crossed out) so obviously its on point. Warm up and ignore the horrible winter weather with these modern day beach boys, catchin waves and mackin babes. If you are around the bay they are playing this show march 1. So kali. Max from John Cota recorded this so fuck yeah. Check it out, I think there are a few free downloads left. Peace. One. Word.

Calculator - This Will Come To Pass

Post young, Kali flag barriers Calculator have just put their new lp, "This Will Come To Pass", up for free download.  Having perfected their style of screams, this album is a melodic onslaught that personifies perfection in the DIY scene. Seriously, the sound quality of this record is superb, not to mention the instrumentation itself. Normally I would turn my nose up slightly when confronted with easily sung-along vocals, but I have made an exception to Jeff's work on this particular record. Above anything else, I was extremely impressed with what the dudes have accomplished.

This Will Come To Pass shows a wonderful and powerful fruition of the sound that the band was culminating on their previous releases. I feel like they really came into themselves with this thing. I really do. Their melodies are so much tighter and stronger, the fast and heavy parts seem way more precise and controlled, and the over all tone of the group has grown way more serious, but the key is that they still have that DIY air about them that some bands loose touch with once they reach a level that Calculator has been given the chance to ascend to. I am always impressed when a band, especially of people I consider friends to a certain degree, get well deserved attention and opportunities but don't forget where they came from. Not to sound jaded, but in my humble opinion way too many groups do the exact opposite.

Calculator are doing like tour tours in the near future, and I believe have another release in the works as well. You can find the dates on your own time, seeing as I have to go in a few minutes, but I would highly suggest that you go out and see them play if you can. Its always fun, and there are always kids who get super into it and it makes it more fun to watch the event as a whole. After they go to I Got Brains, they are coming up to Baltimore with a handful of other bands who will be making an appearance at that fest to play a slopped together half fest aptly called Homie Fest. Or No Brains Fest. Either one. Check out the album, which is obviously linked below, and download a copy of the joint before they run out of downloads. You can also snag the wax copy while your over there. Obviously I would advise you to do so. Word.

Ten Thousand Leagues 2012 Tour Demo

Ten Thousand Leagues just finished a west coast tour and I got to see them play. Awesome as always. Before I saw them up here Facebook told me about this demo, and I snatched it up. I am assuming they had this for sale, but I didn't have any money so why bother looking at merch. The demo songs are sick as fuck, and include a Spitboy cover. They even have real ass new songs that aren't on the demo, so get ready for some new jams. I love the Ten Thousand Leagues guys, best dudes in the world. Really glad I got to see them play twice this summer. One of the sickest bands out there right meow, for real though. Peep this shit and stay stoked on these guys. If you have money buy things from them because they had car trouble and need your money more than you do. Word

t̶o̶n̶g̶u̶e̶

Tongue (pronounced No Tongue) are the poster children of the Kali spirit. Stacked lineup of friends: Ryan from Megan & Amelia/DEERS!/Matsuri, Andrew from Matsuri/Ten Thousand Leagues, Conrad from John Cota and Nik from Calculator. If you are in California you should check out this show and this show on the Ten Thousand Leagues tour so you can see No Tongue. They are a pretty new band, which makes me excited to see what they can put together before the Mayan History Channel Apocalypse. Below is their demo, all hail bands that you need to copy/paste the name. Word.

John Cota & Ten Thousand Leagues

So I have been sitting on this shit for like a month. I don't know for sure but I think I was given these tracks like right when they were finished. Both of these bands from California are somewhat fledgling but are made up of veterans of the game. The John Cota dudes are from the bay/Oakland I think. I know that one of the Cotas was in Versions, who I got to see/play with in Delaware a while back. Ten Thousand Leagues are from greater Los Angeles right? Those dudes were in rather popular bands such as Moldar, Calculator and ColorChromatic. Their bassist, Hannah, was in Lautrec but she is leaving the band I think. I know she isn't going to be on their upcoming tour, being replaced by my boy Andrew of MOLDSURI fame.

So yeah, tour. Both of these bands are going on tour real soon, but not together. I think its kind of really silly but at the end of the day I don't really care because I still get to see both bands and kick it hard. Ten Thousand Leagues are doing the entire country, while John Cota are doing this little mini guy:
july 29th – fresno, ca
july 30th – simi valley, ca
july 31st – los angeles, ca
august 1st – san francisco, ca
august 2nd – eugene, or
august 3rd – seattle, wa
august 4th – olympia, wa
august 5th – portland, or
august 6th – eureka, ca
august 7th – oakland, ca

Go see both of these bands if you can, because they are two of the best in the genre. Rip it like they are getting paid to do it. I havn't seen either of these bands, and I don't really know anyone in JC except for facebook but im super stoked to kick it because they are all pretty really cool. If you live around Olympia come kick it with us on August 4th and 6th.

Now, about this split. First of all, one of the better releases to come out lately. I have been kinda slackin off with Chug because I've been busy, but also because nothing has really got me stoked enough to post it in a while. I've gotten some good shit, and if anyone has gotten ahold of me and given me something and I said I'll post it I will, but I'm not that motivated right now. No offense, just keeping it real. I've been waiting to post this shit for a long time, so last night when Max gave me the green light I got pretty stoked and kind of regretted half assing a post the other night just to keep up with the Jones'. The only lame thing is that I was hoping to get that exclusive first post shit, but I failed. Google the bands and you get a mediafire link. Idiot. But then I saw it on another blog posted like a week ago. Broken heart.

The split starts off with John Cota. If you have never heard them before, its harder screamo that sounds like some of the stuff going on in Europe. Its dark, but not sludgey or grindy or anything. Nice skrimz dynamics all around. They get really heavy alot but its always interesting. They get down with the chugs, which I can always respect. Dynamically they sound like a heavier, less technical Daitro or Aussitot Mort or something. Maybe Who Calls So loud, musically, is kind of similar at some points. I don't know, it's just nice to hear a screamo band that isn't doing the fast euro twinkly techy stuff. I really like the recording quality as well. I hope that the band recorded it themselves. I also put their demo ep thing down at the bottom as well. I got the split because I was asking around for more John Cota shit and I was gonna post this band a long ass time ago.

The second half of the split is all Ten Thousand Leagues. Super fucking hard. Super fucking heavy. Their side starts with some sound clip and I don't know what it is from. Ten Thousand draw more on old school hardcore and punk dynamics, so their stuff is less screamo and more hardcore in nature, although they do have some skrumz elements floating around. Again, recording quality on this side of the split is pretty really dope. One of the better heavy bands that are playing right now. Heavier for us emo pussies, but not metalcore or anything you know? It's like moshing but without the basketball shorts. It's okay to mosh in your American Apparel if you want to. You can even two-step.

I like this split because it isn't flashy. Both bands produce solid tracks and sound good separately, as a cohesive side and as a while album. Although I must admit that I kind of prefer the John Cota side, both bands fucking kill it so hard on this split. Kill em dead. "You marks are feelin to hate it". So please, please, please, a thousand times please, download the fuck out of this and tell your entire crew how good this is. Then go and get a fucking copy from RADICAL FRIENDS, or, even better, go see these bands on their tours and get the split then. Below is the split, the John Cota demo thing, and a video that is unrelated. Oh yeah, Ten Thousand Leagues put their demo on a split 12 inch with Archetypes. The Archetypes tracks are recycled from their album "Steps". You can buy that somewhere on the internet, I don't really know where aside from Olhar De Vidro. I would imagine Ten Thousand would have them on tour. Anyways, that's below as well.

Calculator

Calculator are a really tight hardcore band from the Los Angeles area I think. Isn't it something like they go to school all over but are from LA? I don't know really, but I think that is correct. This band plays a style of hardcore that is influenced by multiple genres, obviously, and sounds similar to fellow California natives Touche Amore and Comadre, kind of. I mean there are the like harder hard parts, then the pretty parts, and some driving parts here and there. The new shit has a really fucking heavy part. I remember last summer around the 4th of July I booked these guys a show in Maryland and after the show I was smoking a blunt with most of this band and the dudes in Burn Idols when the guitarist of Calculator and I started taking about being in bands and shit. I don't remember the entire conversation but I do remember that he was talking about how the point of being in a band like this is to come up with really intricate music, shit that is challenging to play, and just get the songs on lock-down. Musical progression and shit. I thought that was really cool, and I think about that when I listen to Calculator. I still think that they generally put the vocals up a lil too high in the mix, but thats just me. The instrumentation is fucking boss, and sometimes its hard to really hear that shit, especially if you are using jankity laptop speakers.

So, below are two links for all of their material. There is a link for These Roots Grow Deep, which is a collections LP of all their shit from their past EP's and splits and what not. I think that they have had a shit ton of releases that culminated in These Roots. My friend has this on vinyl and it sounds fucking sick. The other link is for their hot new shit, New Forms. Ramez tells me I'm the firs to get it or to post it up or something, so big ups to Skramez for holding it down.

They are going on tour really soon with The Saddest Landscape up and down the west coast, and all of the combined dates are conveniently placed on this here flier:

There are, however, two additional dates which Calculator will be playing without The Saddest Lanscape. The first being in Olympia, Washington at my house, and the last being somewhere in Los Angeles. All of their detailed show information can be found here.

You should go to their website, which is right here, and buy the preorder for New Forms, which is coming out on Melotov. For real though, Melotov is pumping out the good ass records recently. I mean that label has always ruled, but she is cornering the market on this good ass California music. And, for real, shes a really cool person. Really nice.

Calculator is going to raffle off a test press of New Forms between people who get that pre order, so all you collectors should jump on that shit. I don't know whats good with the head count on Roots, but you should also get that shit before it sells out. They have some other gear, like a shirt and a monster patch, that is pretty wrad.

For real. For real though. Buy their shit online so they have them gas muns. Go see them on tour with The Saddest Landscape west coast kids. You know you want to go to these shows because TSL hasnt been over here in like 7 years or something.

Get them downloads down there, and watch the video down there too. The video is of an unreleased new track, ohhhhhhhhhhh.

Ten Thousand Leagues is a hardcore "supergroup" I guess, made up of members of Moldar/Summer Vacation, Calculator and Color Chromatic. There may be other bands involved, but I only know Jeff, Ramy and Mark. The bassist was in Lautrec. Shit is dope. You need to check this out.
