BuffaLo is part of the rap crew 7th Floor Villains and is one of my really close friends. I haven't seen him in a minute, but at the beginning of the year he released his first solo tape entitled "Genesis". Buff is one of the more talented guys out there right now, and I think that anyone who is down with chill rap with really like his release. First Of all I want to thank Robert for letting me do a guest post.you rule bro.

This post of mine is about my favourite hip hop artist:Buck 65.Buck is from Nova Scotia ,Canada (he now lives in Paris,France).His influences come from a  wide range of musical genres (as his wiki page says correctly "Underpinned by an extensive background in abstract hip hop, his more recent music has extensively incorporated blues, country,rock, folk and avant-garde influences."). His lyrics have to do with art,independent films,old 20's films,women (Buck is the Serge Gainsbourg of my generation),baseball and much more.Buck 65 is also a turntablist,producer and he has a degree in applied biology.I tried to find everything he's ever made and present it to you.So here i post his solo albums,EP's,collaborations and some live recordings.Basically The Legendary Buck 65 is the only reason i kept listening to hip hop through the years,he is my hip hop obsession.enjoy

J Dilla

James Dewitt Yancey, aka J Dilla or Jay Dee, was a prolific hip hop producer from Detroit. Before his untimely death at the hands of some blood disease with a huge name in 2006, Dilla worked with anyone who was hot in the hip hop world. There are hella documentaries and websites devoted to the dude, and I don't feel like I should tarnish his name by regurgitating rudimentary facts about him, but I would encourage everyone to take some time to smoke a blunt and listen to some Jay Dee. Stones Throw posted his actual discography, so go take a peak at that crazy list. I'm going to post a few videos below, followed by a shit ton of his albums. Because I am posting so many I don't think I'm going to put the album art above it, but I mean most of the big ones are really easy to find on the internet. Download every single fucking one of the links below, and listen to them until you blow your speakers. I'm serious. You can find his records everywhere, and you should buy them. Seriously, downloading this stuff is the best thing you have done all year. J Dilla is legit top 5 beat makers / producers of all time. I'm serious, if you never listened to this shit then you probably don't like beats. Or you like bad beats. Or you are just dumb.

Giant Golden Rings is the solo project of my dude Adam. I met him a few years back because he was the road dog of The Sharpest. He ended up being the bass player for that band. Anyways, Adam makes his own weird experimental hip hop beat stuff. There are a fuckload of Giant Gold Rings releases, and it is all soo good. A few tracks have vocals on em, but alot of it is just beats. Its real weird, like glitchy video game shit, but its so, dare I say, hyphy. I dig it real hard. I talked to Adam today and I got all of his shit to post up. He has tapes for sale, so holler at him so he can buy new equipment, or drugs, or whatever. Word.

NAH is the solo project of Mike from 1994! He just sent me his songs the other day and I have been bumping them so hard recently. Honestly, the best way I can describe this shit is "What I Would Hope To Hear At The 1996 NBA All Star Jam". Or 1994, get it.

Its all hip hop. I would call it hip hop. Beats and stuff. Live drums and then some electronics and other stuff recorded in his basement. Some dude raps on the first demo song. He chopped and screwed one of his songs, straight up party jams.

That new joint, "TapeFuck", is a lil weirder. More energy, more fuzz. I like it alot. Way jammin. It sounds like he uses more guitars than electronic on this release, but I could be wrong. Imagine if Wizardzz is Mf Doom recorded an album on a tape deck, thats kind of whats going on. I heard that '94 was gonna do a rap album, I wonder if that was just some NAH hype. Who knows. DJ Screw

About 240 mix tapes, 31 albums, 20 album appearances. Screw reigned as The King Of The South from the early 90's until his untimly death in 2000. He perfected Chopped and Screwed music and put the Houston rap scene on the map. There are a fuckload of videos about him on the internet, a few documentaries and stuff and a decent amount of interviews. The Orginator was the head of Screwed Up Click, which featured an all-star lineup of Houston based rappers. The second generation of SUC has some members who you might have heard of. Michael "5000" Watts did a similair thing to what Screw was doing and made Swisha House, you might know some of the dudes on their roster.



DJ Screw was famous for Syrup, Chopped & Screwed and mixtapes. He legit produced records and stuff, but the vast majority of his catalog are these Screw Tapes. Started out as a little thing for his friends, they blew up real fucking fast and he turned it into a full fledged business. Most the early tapes were made for his friends. People would come by and give him a list of songs they wanted on a tape, and he would screw it up and sell it to them. June 27th is arguably the most famous tape, thats the one with the 30 some minute freestyle (fun fact: Paul Wall got his Sittin Sidewayz chorus from this track).



Screw had two different things that he would do on his tapes. He would either record his friends freestyling and then chop it up, or he would take popular songs and chop those. He normally talked (mumbled) over the tracks in the elongated intros and outros.



After he started to get real popular he decided to start a label and record store, Screwed Up Records and Tapes. I hope his girlfriend at the time of his passing is in charge of the store. They have a few stores around Texas that you can pick up Screw gear at. I really want an air-brushed shirt.



So yeah, below are links to torrents I found that has DJ Screw's mixtape Discography. Way too big for mediafire. You can find his albums floating around the internet as well, but these albums are where its at. Its a fuckload of music, like 40GB or something, but I always got room for Screw. I don't really expect alot of people to jump on this, but I know a few people who will be down (big nails, lookin at you). Visit the website, buy some tapes and stuff. Next time you are in Texas go check out one of his stores. All you kids going to SXSW should mob the store in Austin. If I went down there I'd post the fuck up.



Oh yeah, Screw was named a Texas Music Innovator by the Govorner. And I heard The University of Texas bought a fuckload of his records from his personal collection to put on display. R.I.P Robert Earl Davis, J.R forever.

Diligence - The Neglected Mixtape

So our boy Dylan just dropped his first ever Hip-hop mixtape. Dylan used to play with a band called The Lost Tourists but he has been working on his solo hip-hop project for a long time. He's on tour with LiNK (Liberty in North Korea) right now after touring around the country and basically living the Dude's life.

The Neglected Mixtape (2011)

Frank Ocean

By now, I think everyone and their (most likely pissed off) mother has heard of the LA County teen-phenom rap group Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All aka OFWGTKA, or, more simply, Odd Future. With sold out shows across the country and the ultimate hype man in Tyler, The Creator, as well as the enigmatic presence (or lack thereof) of 16 year old wunderkind Earl Sweatshirt, coupled with controversial lyrics and mastery of internet media, it's not really a surprise they've become as big as they are.

But with personalities like Earl and Tyler seemingly bearing all the spotlight themselves, it's easy to forget about the other nine active members of OFWGKTA.

For Frank Ocean (real name Christopher "Lonny" Breaux), that might just be what the doctor ordered. He has casually released a great mixtape without having to face any of the pressures of the blogosphere or mass media hype machine. After moving from his native New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Ocean quietly landed to LA and signed to Def Jam Records, by whom he was been almost entirely ignored. He has worked on music for artists like Justin Beiber and Beyonce, yet had become so fed up with his label that by the time Odd Future had begun to hit full "swag", he self-released his mix tape for free on the group's website, even going so far as to take care of the (completely fucking awesome, let's be honest) cover art himself.

In his own words:


"i. did. this. not ISLAND DEF JAM. that's why you see no label logo on the artwork that I DID. guess its my fault for trusting my dumbass lawyer and signing my career over to a failing company. fuck Def Jam & any company that goes the length of signing a kid with dreams & talent w/ no intention of following through. fuck em. now back to my day. i want some oatmeal and toast. brunch swag."


Nostalgia, Ultra. showcases a level of maturity and aesthetic that most of Odd Future's other releases are largely lacking - for all their punch and swagger, they lack Ocean's ability to bridge the gap between indie mix tape and a cohesive album. For all the rejection and anger he must feel towards the mainstream industry, Ocean has channeled everything he has learned into the best Odd Future release thus far.

Perhaps the best track on the album is the opener, "Strawberry Swing," which features a Coldplay sample from their track of the same name. He begins by singing an excellent melody while reminiscing about an idyllic childhood, before taking note of his own mortality ("We are all mortals, aren't we?/At any moment this could go"), and finally imagining human civilization taking off in spaceships as they leave "millions" and a burning world behind. Pretty heavy stuff for a 23 year old hip-hop producer whose peers are now infamous for glorifying rape, cocaine, violence, homophobia, and even necrophilia. Where other members of the group would simply go for tactics of shock and awe, Ocean digs a bit deeper. On "Songs For Women," he jokes that he couldn't "...play guitar like Van Halen...but you still came around, ate your lunch with me," before later admitting that, "Every time a nigga asks me/If I sing songs to get at women/I say yeah."

By the end of the song he realizes that fame alone cannot provide the basis for true love: "Now every time somebody asks me/If I sing songs to get my women/I say no, they say okay I don't believe it/I say nope, I swear I never do it...All these songs are for women/Songs for women/Songs for you baby/Songs for you."

And by the end of the song you, yourself, have probably fallen in love with Frank Ocean. Let's hope that we get the chance to fall in love with him for years to come.
